THE AQUEDUCT OF DOMGJON

The fortified settlement, which in the local tradition is known as the "City", was located in the present-day village of Domgjon, west of the valley of Fan i Vogël.

According to the researcher Apollon Baçe: The construction of residential centers in the first centuries of our era, on flat terrain, the use of bricks and hydrolyzable mortar gave an impetus to the construction of aqueducts. The aqueduct of the town of Domgjon starts at the mountain of Munella, where the water, after being collected from a small pit, is conveyed to an underground channel. In the middle of the aqueduct was the control well, into which a small gate was inserted from above. The cylindrical well, 12 m deep and 2.5 m wide, is made of stone masonry. A pair of spiral stairs lead to the well in the sole, through which one passed inside the aqueduct made of stone masonry. The aqueduct was built with complete technical knowledge. Its passage through tunnels opened in the rock as well as the construction of the control well clearly testify to the experience of working in rocky terrain, for which the local Pirus population was valued throughout the ancient world.
